“Reutilise whatever you can, do not cover or paint anything just to make it look nice!” – this is the
creed of the founding architects of Bánáti + Hartvig Architect Office. It is in this spirit that they
created their new office building, using the guidelines of circular architecture as a basis. It was
obvious to the architects that they did not intend to increase the environmental burden with a new
building; they wanted to reutilise an already existing old building by all means. Besides, they
reintegrated into the building some components that were previously demolished – sometimes
even giving them a different function –, and they left the revealed surfaces in their demolished
state: the concrete beams remained uncovered and the brick walls unpainted. This gesture
follows the principles of sustainable architecture, giving us an insight into the history of the
building and resulting in innovative yet coherent aesthetics.
While designing and constructing their own office building, the architects of BH gained a wealth of
experience about sustainable architecture. They are pleased to share this knowledge with those
interested, thus also contributing to awareness-raising on the trend of sustainable architecture.

Constructor: RAW Development Ltd

The reconstruction of the building concluded the revitalisation of the area surrounding Széll Kálmán Square in Budapest; the underpass in Várfok Street was built, creating a level-connection between Széll Kálmán Square and Krisztina Boulevard to facilitate pedestrian and cyclist links in the neighbourhood.
The area next to the building was joined to the green surface of Vérmező as an urban park for common use. This created the most significant green arc of Buda – extending from the Elizabeth Bridge to Millenáris Park.
A three-level underground car park was constructed under the building and the garden.
The unique and iconic historical building was restored to its state at the time of its construction based on the original designs, with the original materials, technology and the same ambitiousness.
The building interior was developed with sophistication, using customised furnishings and contemporary Hungarian works of fine art to enrich the interior spaces.
The building is controlled by an intelligent supervisory system for the purpose of minimising energy consumption and ensuring the most efficient operation of the building.
There is a small solar power plant on the roof, which reduces the building’s mains electricity demand. Cooling and heating are ensured by an air heat pump.

Constructor: Szupernova Építő Ltd, György Szkladányi, Viktor Somosi

A truly contemporary building, LOFFICE attracts attention as a refreshing splash of colour in the street wall formed by eclectic buildings. The images and patterns appearing on its facade shade are a tribute to the masters of the past – where the knowledge of co-arts was present in each architectural creation. The innovative transformation of the 8th District of Budapest is well reflected in the project.
The main purpose of LOFFICE is to be used as an office building and a cultural event space. With the investment, the 10-year-old plan and dream of the Klementz siblings – who lead Loffice Ltd, the company developing and operating the building – has come to fruition. The objective of the development was to create an urban oasis, a cosmopolite meeting point, which offers more than a simple office building. In the smart building operating with a minimum ecological footprint, design offices, hybrid workspaces, a co-working office opening to a roof terrace, an event space with garden connection, meeting rooms, and spaces also suitable for being used as co-living apartments provide home to the bustling everyday life of creative businesses, start-ups, and cultural initiatives.

H-1011 Budapest, Szilágyi Dezső Square 1
Candidate: RedWood Holding Ltd
Investor: City Properties Ltd
Designer: Kornél Neschloss-Knüsli
Constructor: Belvárosi Építő Ltd

An ornament to Szilágyi Dezső Square and the Buda-side bank of the Danube, the historicist, monumental three-story and five-level Neuschloss Palace was built in 1899 based on the designs of Kornél Neuschlos-Knüsli.
The three façades and the interiors of the building underwent a full-scale monument reconstruction, developed by RedWood Holding and implemented in the framework of a joint undertaking with Resonator Asset Management Ltd. The investment elevates the building to the status of an “A” category office building, which lends a value-certain quality and an identity that respects tradition to the companies operating inside.
The external renovation of the façade made a significant contribution to the rehabilitation of Szilágyi Dezső Square, while also enriching the Buda-side embankment of the Danube – now an integral part of the Danube panorama – with the sight of a beautiful palace.
In the course of the renewal experiment based on contrasts, the consciously created tension was harmoniously dissolved by interior design expertise and the high-quality materials used. The final result features ground-breaking spaces, which are also exciting from an architectural point of view.

Andrássy út is Budapest's most beautiful avenue, also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The 140-year-old former Haggenmacher Palace, located at Oktogon, was only able to show its undeservedly forgotten values after the renovation and necessary restoration. The investor set a splendid example for the community, since a real gem has been created with the construction of the 121-room hotel, which became a worthy companion to the newly renovated historical palaces in Andrássy Avenue. It was a great challenge for the architect and interior design teams to design a hotel which functions effectively and at the same time fascinates local residents and guests from abroad day after day with its historical charm preserved. The hotel also has a cosy bar, a spa area meeting all demands, a meeting room for 40 people and a small conference room with the original palace interior.
This is the fourth project of Continental Group, the operator, where a former palace has been transformed into a hotel and opened its doors to the public.

LUA Resort*****Balatonfüred is the first element of a complex tourism improvement programme. Accommodation development was made necessary by the demands caused by the interventions planned in the area of the camping site of Füred. The investors moved up to a significantly higher level of quality with the investment. The concept of the 5-star hotel offering adult only services is unique in the country – up to now, it is perhaps only at international luxury destinations that Hungarian travellers could encounter similar establishments. The guests of the future make purchasing decisions with a whole new consciousness and approach; now it is a requirement to provide complex touristic experiences with actual values. The hotel accommodates 78 rooms on 3 levels. Among them 11 suites have a panoramic infra sauna and/or Finnish sauna on the terrace, some are even equipped with a jacuzzi. Guests can enjoy top-level, sophisticated gastronomy, a smoke-inspired cocktail selection, Omorovicza spa treatments, and in the summer a floating pier built on the water of the Lake Balaton, named Sun Lounge & Champagne Terrace. From October 2022, the range of services will be expanded with a multifunctional event space, and from the summer of 2023 a rooftop bar will also await the guests.

The construction of the castle of Tura was commissioned by baron Zsigmond Schossberger in 1883. The result was a building reminding of French palaces and drawing on Italian design. The castle was decaying for decades before being saved from oblivion by the investment of TRA Real Estates Ltd. As a result of the castle’s renovation, the former baronial residence continues to operate as a 19-room elegant hotel and an exclusive event venue under the name of BOTANIQ Castle of Tura. In the course of the complex renovation, which lasted for about 30 months, not only the monument protection restoration of the building and the castle park was kept in mind. The castle has been awarded numerous recognition: it won the Landscape Architecture Award of Excellence 2021, the Traveller Review Award 2021 of Booking.com, the “Best European Castle Hotel 2021” award at the International Travel Awards competition, and the “Best Five-Star Hotel in Hungary 2022” award, while it also triumphed at this year’s Business Excellence award ceremony in the “Best Event Venue – Countryside” category.

The entire design and construction process was carried out in the organisation and with the involvement of the local community.
The Church of Pope John Paul II represents a conscious response to liturgical changes in recent decades. Emphasis is shifted toward the active involvement of worshippers. The community is not a passive observer of events in a sanctuary, but rather actively experiences the holy act.
While the Creator and the almighty God are at the centre of traditional liturgy, modern liturgical efforts have shifted emphasis to the recreator God, the image of a perpetually redeeming Christ.
The green stone altar, which was made of one piece, is the focal point of the space. The relic of the blood of Pope John Paul II was placed at the bottom of the altar stone. The closeness of the altar, the natural light directed at the centre and the sense of familiarity facilitate resonance and reflection.
The liturgical space is surrounded by communal and educational rooms, an event hall, guest room, the priest’s living quarters, offices and service rooms, forming a unified whole together with the yard. The elliptical layout of the church in the small-town, heterogeneous environment symbolises perpetuity.

The purpose of the development was to enhance the importance of the place of pilgrimage, to present the construction history, and to increase the complexity of the place of worship. The architectural concept achieved these objectives through a more open connection to the city centre, increasing the receiving capacity of the place of worship, expanding the functions, raising the spatial organisation to a higher level, restoring or reconstructing the known and unearthed works of art, restoring and improving the technical condition of the temple, and bringing the IT capabilities to a significantly higher level. After restoration, the main altar of the pilgrimage church was returned to its place and the entire interior was renewed. The sacristy was expanded to serve the new liturgical space outside, the oratory and its surroundings were developed into an exhibition space, the internal traffic order of the parish was expanded towards the event hall on the basement level. With the new expansion of the crypt, it became an urn burial place. The pilgrim yard and the Holy Well gained more capacity for visitors with the demolition of the fences, the new external liturgical space, the pilgrim entrance and shops, as well as the new educational operation and social care building, and the restored Calvary.

At his sibling’s request, the local developer with a Roman Catholic upbringing constructed a new chapel and community space on the real estate returned to congregation at the time of the change of regime. This opportunity was created by the successful business that he has run for 31 years.

On the site of the rebuilt chapel, there had originally been a school chapel since 1860, which functioned as a school on weekdays and served as the venue of masses on Sundays.

With the new building, a new community focal point was created in one of the longest villages in Hungary, which intends to attract young people into a new intellectual space. It can operate as a sort of cultural centre, where the newly created spaces can serve as venues for weddings, ordinations, youth programmes and – due to the proximity of the cemetery – mortuary viewings in addition to congregation programmes.

Real estate development concept,
Brief description

The construction of the new covered swimming pool in the Lőverek quarter has been the greatest and one of the most important developments of the Municipality of Sopron City with Country Rights implemented within the framework of the Modern Cities Programme.
The bathing space of the 11,595 m2 establishment, lit with immense glass walls as well as natural light, opened in June 2021 and accommodates a 25-metre and a 50-metre competition pool, a bleacher with a capacity of 1,300 persons and two training pools, while relaxation after trainings and competitions is ensured by a hot-water plunge pool, a jacuzzi, and a sauna. In addition to serving the purposes of swimming tuition, student sport and mass sport and being used by the general public, the swimming pool is today suitable for hosting European-level water sport competitions.
With the successor of the old swimming pool, the city of Sopron has been enriched with a real sport swimming pool and a new architectural symbol. The characteristic mass of the building is essentially limited to the horizontal roof, under which a glass surface ensures lightness and transparency, almost blending in with the natural milieu.

On the site of the already existing pool at the heart of the Debrecen Great Forest, a municipal water park was created: a likeable place offering modern experiences. Aquaticum features fun elements for all generations, while also lining up one-of-a-kind visual elements: clearly linked to Debrecen and the Great Forest, the building is an iconic landmark.
As there was no possibility of increasing the area and no intention to reduce the size of the green surface, the primary attraction is a 12-metres high main building accommodating a 400-metre-long waterslide, a lounge cave, and several pools: an adventure pool, thermal pools, a swimming pool, and a sun terrace on the top of the building. The different functions are divided by water curtains or plant walls. The medicinal pools, the children’s pool and wave pool, the wild-water pool, as well as the sports grounds, the gym park and the playground were placed around the building. The building unit constituting one of the water park’s walls is home to restaurants serving customers both inside and outside the establishment.

The interior space is limited by a circumferential façade symbolising the waves of the water. The enclosed part of the façade is composed of fixed panels of different shades of blue, while transparency is ensured by sophisticated curtain walls in the more open parts.
Two main entrances and therefore two reception halls were created in the building. Some of the service functions – including the toilets, the accessible toilets, and the cloakroom – are located on the basement level. The further service functions were placed on the ground level, under the bleachers: temporary buffets, a cleaning supply room, a sports equipment room and a storage unit. In addition to a 50-m competition pool, a 25-m warm-up pool and a 12.5-m training pool established in the pool space, a jacuzzi and a children’s pool were established in the spa area. Tepidariums (warm rooms) were set up in both the ground-floor spa section and the sauna world upstairs, where there is a variety of recreational facilities: an infrared sauna, a steam sauna, a Finnish sauna, and a devil’s sauna. The Finnish saunas are glass-walled saunas, offering a view of the pool space. The changing rooms for teams are located upstairs, along with the offices, the meeting rooms, the gym, the TV, sound and light room/security room, the sound and light server, as well as the press room/parents’ waiting room. When no competition is taking place in the building, the press room can be used as a parents’ waiting room overlooking the pool. From here, the parents can see all the larger pools and observe the trainings.

Bozsik Stadium – with a seating capacity of 8,000 people and a design meeting the standards of UEFA category 4 and MLSZ class 1, category “A” – was constructed within the framework of the National Stadium Development Programme, according to a comprehensive space planning and revitalisation concept. A substantial proportion of the space around the stadium has remained open; therefore, it functions as a high-quality, orderly place for visitors and the residents of the district, thus also increasing the liveability of this part of the urban fabric. The public space builds upon the aesthetic duality of raw concrete and green surfaces, while the display of iconic Hungarian football on the concrete retaining walls provides an opportunity of respectful remembrance. The park is an ideal place for walks and district events. The construction of the new arena is therefore not only about sports, but also about the demand for and the future perspective of the redevelopment of a part of the city.
All lighting outside and inside the establishment consists of LED lights; in this context, the LED floodlights of the pitch-lighting must be particularly highlighted. The entire roof of the main building is equipped with a solar park. Own wells – integrated with a drainage network – are available for the watering of the green surfaces.

Operator:
HUNGEXPO Budapest Congress and Exhibition Centre Private Limited Company

The government decision on the investment named “The Revitalisation of HUNGEXPO” was enacted in 2019.

The environment, having run down over the years, was revitalised, the establishments were expanded and renovated, and the whole area underwent an architectural and landscape architectural renewal. The cutting-edge technology is accompanied by a high architectural quality, which results in an exhibition and congress centre meeting the requirements of the 21st century.
The largest and at the same time most complex building of the development is the new Congress Centre: its great hall was the first in Central Europe to be equipped with auditorium technology which allows the rows of seats to be rotated and lowered to the level of the stage, thus the rows of chairs of conferences and lectures with cinema-like elevation can be turned into a gala dinner venue, with an area as large as 2,000 m2, within just a few minutes. The range of the hall’s alternative uses is further expanded by the largest LED wall in the country.
One of the most spectacular elements of the investment is the new “F1” reception building with an area of 7,900 m2. The construction evokes the form of three symmetrical petals, consists of steel and glass elements, thus ensuring a full panoramic view of the surrounding green area.
The exhibition area was expanded with two new pavilions, now having a total area of 75,000 m2. The older pavilions were fully renewed. Expanded with the new Congress Centre, it is a perfect venue for conferences, congresses, and other large-scale events in addition to exhibitions.

The overall development goal of the Hegyvidék Municipality is to provide high-quality living conditions and services, improve the quality of life of the district’s residents, and support educated and informed citizenship.
No urban space has historically been formed in the inner part of the 12th District that would play the role of a local city centre. The development of Böszörményi Road to become the main street of Hegyvidék is a defining element of the district's integrated urban development strategy.
The real estate development aims to attract attention to the main street, which could fill the role of the missing local centre. The two pillars of this process are the creation of a multifunctional community space and the provision of related institutions and services to the inhabitants.
The Cultural Salon, a popular public cultural institution of the Municipality, operated in Böszörményi Road until 2018. Hosting many diverse events, over time the premises was found to be too small. The Municipality wished to provide the Cultural Salon with the kind of venue that it deserves.
The complex development of Városháza Square and its surroundings provided an opportunity to achieve the above goals.

The Creative City – Sustainable Countryside (Kraft) programme is an integrated urban and rural development concept seeking new, less-travelled ways of releasing and innovatively connecting creative social energies, taking into account the potential combinations of small and medium-sized cities.
The Kraft concept draws on, uses, and utilises already existing values for the future. The first specific development and a model example of this concept is Kőszeg, which has a unique built heritage, school town identity, citizens willing to act for the city, long-standing cultural, professional, and religious communities.
The key missions of the Kraft programme include the complex renovation of the historical buildings in the city centre of Kőszeg – coordinated by the Institute of Advanced Studies – and ensuring their efficient and long-term sustainable operation, which greatly contributes making the city more attractive. The buildings renewed within the framework of the programme are: Benedictine Monastery, Europe House, Festetics-Chernel Palace, Sgraffito House, Szemző House, Zwinger, and the Synagogue.

The only two-storey building in the old city centre was built in early Baroque style in 1677–1680 as a Jesuit monastery. Until the 1950’s, it was the residence of Benedictine monks. After the expulsion of the monastic order, the building’s premises were turned into apartments. The building was returned to property of the Benedictines in 1990.
The historic building reconstruction of the two-storey building started in 2017. In the first phase the entire roof surface and attic part, as well as the parts on the second floor were renovated.
In the second phase, the remaining parts, the façade, and the courtyard of the building were renovated, the full interior design was completed, the corridors and the community areas were fitted out, and the hotel rooms were furnished. The construction was completed with the restoration of the parts to be protected, the comprehensive upgrading of energy efficiency in line with current principles and requirements, and the complete renewal of the engineering, electrical and light-current systems.
Since its handover in 2021, the building owned by the Hungarian Benedictine Congregation has been operating as a hotel.

Although its last renovation took place in 2014-2015, as the seat of the Institute of Advanced Studies and the “centre” of the Kraft Programme, the building is a key member of the group of inner-city buildings renovated within the framework of Kraft.
The former Szvetics House, later called Sigray House, is a building dating to medieval times, later decorated with Renaissance and Baroque elements. The building has been reconstructed several times over the centuries. Its façade was renewed in 1964, and the building as a whole gained its current image in 1987. Since 1995, it has been the place of operation of the European House Association and ISES Foundation, engaged in the organisation of summer university courses and cultural programmes. It has functioned as the seat of the Institute of Advanced Studies since 2015.
Currently, the building houses research rooms, lecture spaces and offices. The development of the loft and the renovation of the basement also functioning as a community space has broadened the range of the building’s potential uses.

The building, which also includes the former city wall, dates back to the 16th century. Imre Festecsics – one of the first to discover the fundamental laws of genetics – bought the building in 1802, which later became the property of the Chernel family through marriage. After the nationalisation, council flats were developed in the building.

In the first phase of the historical reconstruction in 2017-2018, a comprehensive external and internal renewal was completed. As part of the historical restoration work, the particularly valuable Baroque-Rococo paintworks discovered in the salons during the wall inspection – dating back to 1766-1767, when the building was turned into a Baroque palace – were restored. In the course of the renovation, research rooms, offices, service areas were developed, and the ground-floor premises previously functioning as a stable now hosts lectures and exhibitions.

The aim of the second phase is to complete the full interior design of the building, covering the complete range of interior design works.

Sgraffito House, a building of Renaissance origin built in the 16th century, was named after the sgraffito decoration on the façade, which was considered a special feature in Hungary. The word of Italian origin refers to a multi-layer plaster decor, which essentially means applying two layers of plaster on the façade, then removing one of them according to a predetermined pattern.
In addition to the decorative motifs, there is a Latin quote on the façade: an excerpt from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans. The quote in Latin reads: “Non est volentis, neque currentis sed miserentis dei” - in English: “So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy” (1668).
In the 18-19th century, the building was expanded with a courtyard wing, and the façade was transformed into Baroque style.
The complete renovation of the building took place in 2017-2018, when in addition to the renovation of the interior, the building’s façade was also restored.
The library of the Institute of Advanced Studies operates on the building’s second level. In the loft space research rooms were developed during the renovation.

Built around 1905, Szemző House is a post-Art Nouveau work of art of the Viennese Plachnich school, with some Art Deco features.
In the building, which previously functioned as the local House of Arts, research rooms and offices were developed after the renovation, by preserving the original rooms and service spaces. The full renovation of the previously unused basement level resulted in the creation of an auditorium and a server room.
In the first phase of the historic building reconstruction, a full external and internal renovation was completed, which included the restoration of the parts to be protected, the comprehensive upgrading of energy efficiency in line with current principles and requirements, and the complete renewal of the engineering, electrical and light-current systems.
In the second phase, the full interior design of the building was completed, the corridors and the community areas were fitted out, and the research rooms upstairs were furnished.
During the renovation of the historical building, the preservation and renovation of the existing building elements was a priority: upgrading of the windows, renovating the cement cladding, and remedying the missing elements based on the sample taken from the existing one.

The synagogue was built in a romantic style in 1856 with the support of Fülöp Schey. Following World War II, the abandoned building gradually decayed. By 2016, the building has become the property of the Hungarian State. The architectural planning of the renovation started at the end of 2017 and was finally completed in 2021.
The building complex has multiple purposes: its development into a place of worship and remembrance, “a house of reconciliation”, a cultural, exhibition, training, and conference centre resulted in an institution with special added value which attracts the city’s residents, academic and educational institutions, as well as visitors.
During the restoration of the interior, efforts were made to preserve as much of the surviving building as possible; therefore, the entire surface of the walls were renewed by restorers, in addition to modernisation in line with current principles and requirements and the installation of engineering, electrical and light-current systems.
The former rabbi house is now home to research rooms and service areas.

Believed to originate from the 13th century, the nine-sided bastion is considered as the oldest part of the town’s defence system. In times of war, it served as the south-western corner bastion of the former city wall. Its current form was built before the Turkish invasion in 1532.
It has performed several functions over the centuries: in addition to its role played in defence, it has been used by the locals as a pantry, a warehouse and according to some sources, even as a prison. The lower floors of the building were used for food storage. After losing its defence function, the tower was used for different purposes; in 1820, there was an idea to turn it into a theatre. Until the recent past, it served tourism and museum purposes. In the cellar, there is a beam wine press made in 1778.
The tower was completely renovated in 2015 within the framework of the Kraft Programme. As a result, the building received new, sustainable functions: it now functions as the exhibition space of the Institute of Advanced Studies, a venue for lectures, conferences, and cultural events.

Nyíregyháza has a lively and atmospheric inner city, where the urban landscape is shaped by parks, squares, enormous green surfaces, modern and old buildings. One of the city’s largest coherent green areas, Bessenyei and Benczúr Squares are located in the heart of the city, in a previously underutilised and dilapidated area, having lost its function.

Thanks to EU funds, the park reconstruction of Benczúr and Bessenyei Squares formed part of the “Development of a Green City in Nyíregyháza” project, which was characterised by the pursuit of sustainability, as promoted by the Green City Movement. The development aimed at further enhancing the attractive urban image, creating an inviting inner city with a uniform visual identity and advanced recreational functions.

As a result of the improvement of the existing functions and the creation of new ones, the development of Bessenyei and Beczúr Squares resulted in the realisation of recreational areas, water architecture, playground development, and a running track by the creation of a sustainable, family-friendly green surface, which can be used and lived in by all age groups.

Market Square in Tata is a “newly” developed quarter, populated mostly with commercial buildings. The northern “closure” of this cluster is the completed building, which marks the beginning of another urban space and carries a new character. The building is characterised by the white and anthracite colours, the shaping of the building, a proportional facade, asymmetrical unity, and balance. The apartments with variable floor plans have one, two or three rooms. Each apartment has a large loggia or roof terrace. The ground-floor apartments have a private garden connection as well. The second-floor apartments overlook the historical centre, with the tower of the Tata Castle in the distance. Economical sustainability is ensured by the modern heat pump surface cooling and heating system; energy for the community functions is provided by solar panels. The investor financed 20% of the development from own resources and the rest from sales revenues. All the apartments were sold before the completion of the investment. The building won the House of the Year award at the county’s architectural competition in 2022.

In the immediate vicinity of the neighbourhood with excellent public transportation infrastructure, there is a wide range of shopping opportunities, a local government office, a playground, a nursery school, as well as a well-designed park located only 100 metres away from the project site. The floor areas of the apartments with efficient floor plans range from 30 to 110 square metres; taking into account the emerging needs, the majority of the flats offered were around 50-60 square metres. A special feature of the residential park was that the roof level was destined to accommodate fully customisable homes with terraces and panoramic view of the Buda hills.
In addition to its excellent technical quality and prime location, the value of Metropolitan Garden lies in the smart solutions provided by the residential park and the wide spectrum of community services, with which LIVING aims to improve the quality of life of those living here.

Paskál Garden homes are being built on a 3.2-hectare undeveloped site on the bank of the Rákos stream in Budapest, in line with the urban development concept. The aim of the project is to build a 455-apartment residential complex with modern architecture, creating a park-like environment for all to enjoy, and to serve as an urban, community and leisure centre for the area through the provision of retail and office spaces.
A priority aspect of the development is the revitalisation of the Rákos stream, bordering the site, by providing woodland and a pond to ensure a natural habitat for native plant and animal species. To enhance the green environment, trees have been planted along the façades of the buildings as a special solution.
Environmental awareness is reflected in the sustainable technical solutions and the design of the heat pump heating system. Therefore, the AA+ energy rating and the quality of the materials used ensure that the residential complex will retain its value for decades to come.

The investment aimed to develop the castle of Bodajk into a tourist destination hosting interactive, world-class hunting and cultural events and drawing from hunting traditions, while taking the aspects of monument protection into consideration. On the one hand, the Bodajk hunting lodge offers a special, unique exhibition to the tourists arriving in the region, where visitors can find out about hunting traditions in a 21 st century environment; on the other hand, the interactive display devices also provide an opportunity to train the forestry professionals of the future. In the design of the exhibition spaces, the needs of several age groups were taken into account. The interactive spaces present the different hunting areas of the world, which makes the building a suitable venue for customised educational programmes. The programme is made even more unique and memorable by the experience of an expanded reality. The visitors can also participate in virtual safaris and hunting tours. The renewal of the castle park and its involvement into the exhibition programme were other important elements of the renovation.

The general goal of the project is to create in Tatabánya City with County Rights a new integrated service and knowledge centre which meets the 21st century requirements of library services, in particular, in terms of life-long learning, social inclusion and the reduction of disparities of opportunities. The intention was to build a “green” library, designed and constructed in line with the standards of environmentally conscious building certification systems.
It was envisioned that, as a result of the high-quality development of the library, educational, research and service functions, the renewing institution would become the cultural and community centre of Tatabánya, which – in addition to fulfilling the basic functions – can host programmes aimed at skills development and other community programmes. The building of the thus created knowledge centre can enable the integration of the county and the city library and the unified operation of the services.

Constructor: Munkás-Butykó Construction Ltd

For years, one of the most beautiful buildings in Mohács, the Silk Factory (Selyemgyár), impressive even in its desolation, waited for its fate to turn for the better. The unique property with a panoramic view of the Danube became one of the jewels of Mohács after the renovation respecting the original architectural concept. The reborn building was formally opened in June 2021. On the ground floor of the main building there are office and business premises, while an event hall capable of accommodating 400 people was created upstairs, with additional service rooms connected to it. At the courtyard entrance of the main building steps that can also be used as a stage, a room serving the stage and ramps were built. The science of modern age was installed in a nostalgic environment reminiscent of the industry of the past: the world of IT, programming, and robots. An Innovation and Technology Centre and a children's playhouse were built in the originally hard silk storage building. On the site of the demolished buildings, green surfaces, public parks, uniformly paved surfaces were created with street furniture, public and decorative lighting, and public space artworks.

The Sándor Márai Cultural Centre moved into the historical building located at Krisztina Square 1 in 2021, following the building’s renovation.
The building was constructed in 1893 for the Buda Civic Casino according to the designs of Imre Francsek, featuring a large event hall, shops, apartments, and a small corner dome. The Municipality of Budavár gradually acquired the building – damaged during and after World War II – over several years of deliberate property purchases. Now, the cultural institution to be housed here is expected to strengthen the urban subcentre nature of the neighbourhood. During the investment, an essential aim was to implement the authentic historical restoration of the building, while keeping the ground-level supermarket and ensuring the high-level performance of the new functions. The corner dome and the majority of the façade ornaments were placed back on the building, and the relatively intact great hall regained its former glory. The interior design is characterised by environmental awareness and high quality. Over its one year of operation, people have grown fond of the institution and gladly use the offered meeting points and spaces hosting cultural and leisure activities.

The Kaposvár Intermodal Transport Centre is a unique development, the first of this type in the country. By arranging the different modes of transport next to each other, transportation in Kaposvár has been made faster, safer, and more comfortable. The parts of the development form a harmonised functional unit, rendering the lives of 32 thousand people more comfortable every single day, while also creating a modern townscape with its neat forms and colours, with Esterházy Bridge – which can also be regarded as the city’s new symbol – being its focal point.
This development goes far beyond the modernisation of transportation; an urban and area renewal concept was brought into existence which created a unique and exemplary product with the construction of new urban collecting roads, road and pedestrian overpasses and the creation of renewed public areas and liveable community spaces. With imposing and innovative technical solutions above the surface and renewed and modernised public utilities below the surface, it creates a lasting, safe, and liveable environment for those living in and those passing through the city.

The primary objective of the reconstruction was to give back tothe iconic building its former importance, to restore the original spatial system, and to turn it into a significant element of the railway node – even if notfunctioning anymore as a royal waiting hall.

Development of the Lake Tisza cycle route and bridges

The new Poroszló-Tiszafüred cycle route provided a safe connection between the two important settlements of Lake Tisza and completed the route around the lake. The development also contributed to boosting ecotourism in the region. The unique appearance of the bridges was achieved by a continuous wave geometry, which may remind the viewer of the undulations of the surface of the lake or the physical representation of the propagation of light and energy. The pure white structures fit naturally and organically into the environment: they have become worthy symbols of Lake Tisza. At the shallow water crossings of the lake, the Eger and Szomorka stream bridges were built following this sine wave concept. At the crossing of River Tisza, it was possible to build a new bicycle bridge structure by expanding the substructures of the existing road bridge. Canal Bridge No X is Hungary's first movable bicycle bridge structure. The bridge can be operated by hand, and the shape of the counterweight – which imitates a "horseshoe" – is a reference to Hortobágy, situated nearby. links:

In 2008, on the occastion of the 100th anniversary of the construction of Wekerletelep, the Municipality and the Károly Kós Association launched an invitation for an architectural design competition intended to establish a new market on the site of the old row of stalls. The designers of the 2 winning tenders created a joint work, involving the students of the Itinerant School in the preparation of the detailed drawings. The new market had to be designed on a triangular plot of land, and the construction was required not to disturb the operation of the market in any way. During the planning phase, numerous design versions were born, which gave rise not only to a building serving the local community, but also to a local living space. The building – consisting of a ground floor and a loft – accommodates business premises, multifunctional community and sales areas, service areas, while a traditional small-scale producers’ market was developed in the area enclosed by the building. The specific visual identity of the market building is completed by the degree of elaboration in the architectural details, the custom-designed typography, the sheet metal ornaments based on the play of shadow and light, and the wooden shades. It is almost like time travel: rooted in the past, growing in the present and bringing fruits in the future.

As the central building of the HUNGEXPO Congress and Exhibition Centre, the landmark-type reception hall named “F1” was developed within the framework of the revitalisation of HUNGEXPO. In addition to ticket offices, the building accommodates the entire back office of the operation, as well as the energy base of the exhibition and trade centre.
The building is composed of three symmetrical petals. The net floor area of the building – consisting of a basement, a ground level and 2 floors – is approximately 7,900 m2. The areas of visitor check-in and the infrastructure-related background functions (buffet, restrooms) were placed on the ground level. The floors give home to offices serving the operation and an event venue with capacity for 300 persons. The basement level and the attic are occupied by engineering rooms and the energetic centre of the building.

Counterbalancing the lean world of the pavilions, the building places emphasis on the reception area as an organic, contemporary architectural element. With its valuable leafy trees and clumps, the park was given a priority role in the shaping of the mass. The organic body blending into the environment was designed by the architect with a view to bypassing and protecting the park’s trees.
As a result of the bays of the neat, arched, and dynamic façade, as well as the effects of light and shadow, the building always shows a different face to its environment depending on the perspective.

Reformed Nursery School on Svábhegy and related service units

As part of the Reformed Centre in Felhő Street, a nursery school building for 5 groups of pre-schoolers was established – along with the related service units (caretaker’s apartment, outdoor playground, overground car park, staff accommodation) – by utilising and reconstructing the former villa building.
The key factor determining the development was the intention to create an opening towards the old-wood environment, the church, and the manse. This had to be realised in a way that the building’s geometry can carry an additional meaning instead of being merely a layout necessary from a functional point of view: the embracing “protective” arm lends actual security to the enclosed play yard, and the glazed opening towards the big trees and the nature gives the building a sacred content. In an environmentally responsible way, the building uses ceiling cooling and heating with energy produced by a heat pump.

The investment significantly increases the number of available places in nurseries located in a favourable environment. Furthermore, the indoor and outdoor spaces created can become new venues for community life and community events.

The third educational institution in Budakalász – a settlement in the agglomeration of Budapest with a continuously increasing population – “Patakpart” (Streambank) Primary School has a capacity of 416 pupils.
The building’s structure permits separated operation, i.e., community use. Its gymnasium and the related service spaces are accessible from an independent entrance. Thanks to its attractive appearance and structural system, the multi-level central space, which also has a loft, is suitable for hosting events, while the adjoining cafeteria and kitchen have the capacity to serve conferences. During such events, the educational wings can be separated.
Typically, the traditional elements of the settlement were used in the construction, thus the building features coverings made of local cut stone, as well as brick and structured plastered surfaces. Thanks to careful planning and construction, the school was built in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible way, without compromising on the demands.

Insula Lutherana, the new centre of the local evangelical congregation, is situated in Győr’s new town, lying close to the bank of the River Rába.
The enormous classical group of buildings of the so-called Convention Building is one of the most significant monument complexes of Győr, extending all the way from the bank of the River Rába to Petőfi Square. Teachers at the evangelical grammar school operating here included János Kis, who organised the agile literature of the 18th-19th century and was one of those discovering the talent of Hungarian poet, Dániel Berzsenyi.
The renovation of all elements of the building complex can be regarded both as classic monument protection and contemporary architecture at the service of functional expansion.
The building complex includes the nursery school, the Archives, the Old Church, the parsonages, the old and the new school building, as well as the Convention Building with the pastoral office, the congregation hall, and the dormitory rooms.
The new buildings surround the “evangelical island”, entwined with the old ones. All this symbolises the new construction projects being concluded and Insula Lutherana becoming complete.
The renovation of the building complex not only enriches the Evangelical Church, but also the whole community of Győr, the neighbouring settlements, and in fact Hungary itself.

The plot subject to the planning, situated on the southern side of Baross Square, had been vacant for decades, stretching between Baross Square and Mosonyi Street, bordered by closely built-in adjacent buildings. In 2007, the construction of the office building project was launched on the property but was later left unfinished due to the bankruptcy of the investor during the 2008 crisis, with only the civil engineering works having been completed (diaphragm wall, foundation plate, partial reconstruction of the subway ventilation tunnel). As the structural engineering works on the basement level had not been finished, the resistance of the work pit was insufficient. In order to ensure the stability of the adjacent buildings, in 2009 the bank continued the structural engineering works to the minimum necessary extent to support the diaphragm wall around with the ceilings of levels -3 and -2.
The plot was purchased by B&L, German property developer, in 2015 with the intention to develop a 3+ star hotel with 312 rooms on the Baross Square side, and a residential house accommodating 45 apartments with floor areas ranging between 30 and 95 m2 with a central corridor layout on the Mosonyi Street side. The level of lease is currently 80%.
